| The
Girl who Swore, Spat, and Barked
Even
if you are completely new to homeopathy, common sense alone will
lead you to a certain theme in Janie’s case. Just think about, as
we did, what was most out of proportion about Janie: undoubtedly
her incessant fits of swearing coupled with her equally nonstop
apologizing. Add to this her barking, spitting, and licking, her
fear of dogs, dislike of cats, and history of being bitten by a
dog. To make the puzzle complete, think about Janie’s dread of bathing
and her terror of being sucked into the swimming pool drain. What
does this bring to mind? Janie’s behavior mimicked that of a mad
dog. Janie needed a very dilute, harmless, yet effective preparation
of the saliva of a rabid dog. The name for this medicine in homeopathy
is Lyssin or Hydrophobinum. Although the idea
of giving a medicine like this to Janie might seem a bit shocking,
it merely follows the concept of giving the hair of the dog that
bit you, so to speak.
Lyssin is well known among homeopaths to offer considerable
benefit to those with a remarkable fear of water, bathing, dogs,
and the dark. It is common for people needing this medicine to exhibit
animal-like, and particularly doglike, behaviors. Their outbursts
of rage are reminiscent of a dog foaming at the mouth. Another strange
characteristic of those needing Lyssin is the tendency
to fits of anger followed by immediate remorse. What brings on a
state like this in a human being? Often a dog bite, such as Janie
experienced at age three. Another etiology is repeated torment or
harassment.
Janie’s response? Five weeks after giving her a single dose of Lyssin,
her mother reported that the barking had diminished, as had the
spitting and swearing. Now there were typically a couple of bad
words in a day compared to the hundred or so before homeopathic
treatment. She could sit in a room without going ballistic. The
reflections were no longer as much of a concern to Janie. Her baby-sitter
was impressed with the improvement in her behavior. Getting her
to bathe was less of a battle. Janie’s teachers had been equally
amazed by her behavior at summer school, and one instructor had
even remarked that she was beginning to be quite popular. The licking
had diminished, as had other tendencies that her mother viewed as
somewhat obsessive. She was still immature and continued to want
her mother’s company every second, but there was a significant improvement
in Janie all around.
At her two-month follow-up telephone appointment, Janie’s mother
estimated that she was at least 75 percent better across the board.
Her teachers continued to be amazed at the change in Janie. Not
only did she now have friends at school, but she was busy with after-school
play dates as well. Her sensitivity to shiny glass was considerably
improved, as was the swearing. The headaches were completely resolved.
Bathing was no longer a dreaded event, and Janie no longer found
it necessary to draft letters of apology ad infinitum.
Janie has needed three doses of the Lyssin. Her parents
and teachers marvel at the positive change they have seen in her.
Now, a year after beginning homeopathic treatment, in addition to
all of the other improvements already mentioned, her letters of
apology have been replaced by love notes to her mom. She recently
experienced a partial relapse, and the Lyssin was repeated.
